Tips for Becoming a Successful Actor

Becoming a successful Hollywood actor takes a lot of hard work and dedication to your craft. Here are some simple tips to help your acting career become a reality. First, understand the definition of success: An accomplishment of an aim or purpose. A person that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity.
  1. Define what success means for you:
It can be easy to slip into the feeling that “you are not making it.” Especially if you are not counting and tracking the small successes you are having along the way. There can be success in regularly being called for auditions, in getting callbacks, in booking the jobs and getting a paycheck. Success can come from working your craft in classes and pushing yourself to embody new personas and attitudes that you did not feel you could reach.
  1. Have a clear vision about how you plan to attain your goal:
I recommend that:
  • Do lots of research on different types of roles that you would like to play.
  • Watch movies, television shows, go to theater.
  • Who are your favorite actors – and why?
  • Define what performances inspire you.
  • Make a list of what actors, directors, producers, etc. you want to work with
  • Start creating on your career by setting short term and long term goals.
There are so many amazing nuances in acting performances and it is a fantastic learning experience when you watch different actors in any medium. As an example, one of my many favorite actresses of all time is Meryl Streep. In The Devil Wears Prada, she played the role of Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine with such depth and inner life. She was that boss that you love to hate. In fact, she takes on the character of every role she plays with such abandon that I tend to forget I am watching the amazing Meryl Streep. Another actor I love to watch is Jeff Perry in the ABC hit Television series, Scandal. His character, Cyrus Beene is manipulative, conflicted, remorseful, intense, amoral and idealistic and Mr. Perry plays the role brilliantly. These are just a couple examples of different kinds of depth these actors bring to their roles. Watching many types of performances like these gives you an education in the field of acting.
  1. Maintain your focus on your goal:
As an actor, you are a bit of a maverick as compared to traditional career paths. It can be easy to get distracted by friends and family members who do not have your passion for the craft, coupled with personal doubts that can grow out of rejections and illogical actions or opinions within the industry. Keep your focus on your goals, clear, distinct and well-defined. This means to maintain your purpose and interest in acting and your career. To succeed you will have to endure the bumps, the downs and loses. Keep working on your career and stay focused even when the going gets tough. When adversity hits you and your career, when a person close to you for some reason doesn’t support your goals, you still have to maintain your focus and not give up.
  1. Be persistent!
Persistence is definitely one of the most important factors when it comes to succeeding as an actor. As a casting director I have heard so many stories of actors who almost gave up their passion and their dream to be a successful working actor because they didn’t get that “one” job or someone treated them poorly or told them show business is so difficult. Simply put, you can’t listen to any negativity by anyone, including the negative voices in your head. Ignore them, persist and move forward. Spend your time persisting and focusing on the positive aspects of yourself, the areas of yourself that make you a good actor.
  1. Stage time, Stage Time, Stage Time:
The simplicity is if you want to be an actor, you need to act! Try not to turn down an opportunity to act whether it is in acting class, plays, commercials, industrials, web-series, parts in movies, television shows, etc. I call this Stage Time. My rule of thumb is to take advantage of anytime you are asked to perform. Seek to find any Stage Time you can even if it is creating a performance in your own backyard to family and friends. Also, by taking on many roles, you not only build your resume, but this gives you a chance to perform a variety of characters and create different emotions. Be bold, be an artist and continue to pursue your passion!! These are a few simple tips to get you on the road to becoming a successful actor!!! Happy Auditioning!!!
