On the October 5th episode of The Voice, Pharrell says to a contestant named Shelby, “That’s what being 16 years old, being driven and dreaming super hard gets you, it gets you, everybody in here standing up and clapping for you.” Pharrell’s quote to this contestant on the blind auditions of The Voice reminded me of a very important factor when it comes performing. It doesn’t matter whether you are a singer, a dancer, an actor or any kind of performer, what is important is your ambition. The definition of ambition is: A strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. The actors who I have seen be successful, have a certain drive. They eat, sleep and dream about performing whether it be on stage, television or in a movie. They are artists who not only work on their craft, but they do their research. For example, if they have an audition for an episodic show, they make sure they have watched an episode of the show so they know what the project and the overall tone is about. These actors also watch tons of movies, television shows and look at what kind of roles they can play and perform as much as possible. Successful singers do the same thing also – listen to lots of different styles of music, watch other musical artists perform and practice as much as possible. Good things come to those who work hard. Success is a combination of your talent, your charisma, training, looks, attitude, your charm and even a little bit of luck. But it takes a lot of hard work and ambition to benefit from that luck. In an article in Business Insider on Sept. 5, 2012, the writer, Max Nisan, said, “Successful people in every field are often said to be “blessed with talent” or even just lucky. But the truth is, many worked harder than the average person can even imagine. From athletes like Michael Jordan to executives like Howard Schultz (Chairman and CEO of Starbucks), these people are known for waking up early and working toward a goal while other people are still in bed, and staying later than everyone else too. Old fashioned hard work. Anyone can do it. Let these people be an inspiration.” While it can look like people became successful over night, it is actually the fact that they have been working super hard and going above and beyond the average person to achieve that success. My advice is be ambitious, courageous and energetic in your aims toward achieving your goals. Don’t be a dilettante and just dabble in your career. Go for it with a zest, vitality and passion that drives you and before you know it, everyone will be standing up and clapping for you!
